Serendivi Resort Villa in Tangalle is enriched with the facilities of a resort combined with the cozy and familiar nature of a modern villa making Serendivi truly one of a kind. Serendivi is a dream come true for every traveler that yearns for new adventures. Serendivi doesn’t just meet expectations, the experience is truly transcendent.

The meaning of the name Serendivi is “a place that one happens to come across during a journey and falls hopelessly in love with” and even the logo is designed with immaculate attention to detail. The logo consists of vivid colours that represent the elements that make the resort truly special; the turquoise oceans, golden sands and the sun that dawns in the horizon. The uniqueness of the geographical location of Kahandamodara beach is such that the travelers get to revel in the breathtakingly beautiful views of both, the sunrise and sunset alike at the very same place.

Words cannot do justice to some places in the world, and Serendivi is one of them. The architecture itself allows you to be one with nature. The column-less construction was a creative leap by the architect, Arosha Perera, who did not want to obstruct the stunning views of the Indian Ocean. This design in architecture allows guests the freedom to experience the majestic beauty of Serendivi’s surroundings. The post-modern and luxurious rooms, coupled with great hospitality and food ensure that guests have a truly relaxing, unparalleled experience that soothes their soul.

Ample space in this beautiful destination allows children to run around and enjoy themselves immensely. Serendivi understands that your pets are family, and they too deserve to be taken on new adventures with you so your little friends are also welcome at the pet-friendly resort villa. The Serendivi team is immaculate and precise in the care they provide their guests. Whether it’s providing transport, food or organizing a tour, the team caters to ensure that guests are happy and feel right at home.

Serendivi also provides some exciting recreational activities to keep guests entertained, inclusive of a luxurious pool under the coconut trees to bask in the warmth of the sun, a fully equipped gym and a game room.

For those who can never have too much of the beach can enjoy private access to the pristine Kahandamodara beach right from the property for a long stroll, yoga, a game of badminton or volleyball, along with exciting quad bike rides.

Another aspect that makes Serendivi the perfect getaway is the fact that it is located in an area with so many landmarks and must-visit locations. Guests can enjoy the turtle hatcheries at Rekawa, a wildlife tour of Yala and Udawalawe, take in the colorful culture in Katharagama or go on a whale watching expedition in Mirissa.

The mastermind behind this masterful work of art, Dr. Nishantha Gunasekera had this to say regarding Serendivi: “Being an avid traveler myself, it has been a dream to launch a quiet, yet luxurious retreat such as Serendivi. Serendivi is truly an escape from the fast-paced life we lead and the perfect place to wind down and be one with nature. I hope Serendivi brings an experience unlike any other to the people who stay with us”.

All this and more is what makes Serendivi stay true to its motto; Explore. Experience. Transcend. For more information please visit www.serendivi.lk

A “Grand” Escape

Whenever we feel like we need to escape the crazy pace of life in Colombo, there is a place an hour and a half’s drive away that transports you in to a world of grandeur, history and old world charm. The UNESCO heritage site that is the Galle Fort holds many wonders for any type of traveler, and every time we visit there’s something new to experience. In fact the city of Galle itself is a continuously evolving culture attempting to find a bridge in between its rich historical heritage and the modern world.

Combing these two aspects in a perfectly curated setting lies Asia Capital’s latest luxurious holiday destination, Le Grand. As its name suggests everything is about grandeur in this scenic location. Le Grand stands majestic on an alcove just outside the ramparts of the historic Galle Fort and opens up to the Indian Ocean on one end with its own natural pool protected by a series of rock formations and screw pine bushes. The vast, lush green garden slopes down in to the natural pool giving the building a look of being set upon a hill.

Southern hospitality is at its best from the time you set foot in to the lobby of the Le Grand with cool towels and a choice of welcome drinks from Iced Coffee, fresh Passion Fruit Juice and Lime and Mint Soda to choose from. Check-in was as cool as the gentle breeze that flows in from the Oceanside to the large open space that doubles as a waiting area.

Le Grand boasts four types of rooms in addition to the largest number of suites and we were ushered in to ours by a friendly young man who took the trouble of explaining the features of our room in detail. The room itself overlooking the infinity pool, the ocean and the ramparts was tastefully decorated with a predominance of earthy brown hues that gave quite the relaxing feel to the room. With complimentary Wi-Fi, cable TV and the most high-tech toilet we’ve seen in a while leaving the room was not an option had it not been for having to explore the rest of the property and the great city of Galle beyond. We could seriously just curl up under the comfortable covers, order 24-hour room service and watch reruns of TV shows all day long!

But then it was necessary to take a plunge in Le Grand’s famed infinity pool, relax in the bubble pool under the purple dusk as the sun set and sip on mocktails prepared by the skilled bartender at “Tide”. The pool bar also has one of the most interesting menus with blue liquid inside that dances to the tunes of the waves when moved around. The scenery was breathtaking as the purple hues of the sky turned darker and the stars came out to twinkle. Unfortunately for us who would’ve loved to lie out there on the pool beds watching the constellations, the heavens opened up which meant we had to head back in.

The rains did have its advantage though, as warm Japanese-inspired seafood dinner awaited us at Le Grand’s fine dining restaurant “Blue”. Built on top of one of the natural rocks that dotted the landscape, this restaurant takes its namesake very seriously from the shades of blue in the cutlery and crockery to the mellow music that softly plays in the background. The open kitchen where the day’s freshest catch gets prepared to perfection is a treat to watch while watching the distant lighthouse flashing its solitary beam warning the ships afar of the dangers of venturing too close to shore. The entire experience was dreamy to say the very least with the low lighting and the candle-lit tables adding to the allure. We sampled everything from freshly-made Sushi Rolls to Tempura and Nigiri, Ramen and more until we had our fill of fish. Our entrée was a definite highlight served in what resembled a mini paraffin lamp, as was our desserts which clearly had a lot of thought and love being put in to presentation.

We awoke the next morning to the bright sunlight peeping its way through the curtains and beckoning us out of peaceful slumber. Although rising up was an ordeal a fully-equipped gym and a soothing spa treatment awaited us. The “Shirodhara” oil treatment was as relaxing as one can get. The controlled drip of medicinal oil on to the center of your forehead and the skilled hands of the masseuse made you forget all the troubles in the world and drift off to a place of Zen. Le Grand also has a steam room and Jacuzzi at its spa which we opted out of due to time but were told are quite extraordinary.

Breakfast was another grand affair at the all-day-dining restaurant serving up the best inter-continental and local wares. The added gesture of baking bread right before your eyes and having it served to your table by an ever-smiling young lady was as delightful as every bite of the warm, bread itself. Lots of cheese, cold cuts and pancakes with every type of sweet topping you can think of (Imagine Chocolate Sauce, Butterscotch Sauce, Powdered Sugar, Maple Syrup and Chocolate Shavings!) made up for a not-so-healthy breakfast. But then who really cares when you’re on holiday right?

A visit to the Galle Fort is a must when staying at Le Grand and for those more adventurous the hotel arranges for whale watching and sight-seeing tours with local operators. A word from the wise, although our trust PickMe has ventured to the South the drivers are a little apprehensive to go around in tourists hotspots as the local “tuk tuk mafia” aren’t the friendliest bunch, so we propose walking. The mild climate permits it and the fort isn’t too far off. If you are in to history then the cobblestone streets are rampant with historical buildings made to Dutch architecture, museums, and local historians always willing to tell their version of the story. The streets are also adorned by gift shops, and an array of restaurants serving meals from every corner of the world. The ice-cream whether it be homemade from Dairy King or the best gelato from Isle of Gelato is a must-try.

We’ve heard before of “Breakfast in Bed”, but Le Grand does their version of a breakfast tray floating in your own personal plunge pool. A tray laden with fruit, bread, cheeses AND champagne is delivered to your pool to enjoy while taking a relaxing dip before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Colombo.

When in need of a perfect escape from the mundane, Le Grand has it all planned out down to the most minute detail. This is what makes holidays memorable. The perfection is in the detail.

The Victoria Golf & Country Resort: A Paradise On Earth

I was fortunate to visit The Victoria Golf & Country Resort a few months back, and it was everything you would read and see in a picturesque storybook resplendent with all things quaint. Donald Steele adroitly designed this gargantuan property in 1997; it stretches over 500 acres of absolute greenery and is ranked among the “100 Most Beautiful Golf Courses in the World”. As someone who is past his third decade on this earth, this incredible place is nostalgic to say the least. You are cosseted in faultless architecture and voguish interiors, while a well-trained staff is present to offer you incredible levels of hospitality. Golf may indeed be regarded as an elitist game, but this resort offers you access to try your hand in it whether you are an old-fashioned gent or a new-world millennial. Evolution is the name of the game, and the Victoria Golf & Country Resort is open to both leisure seekers and holidaymakers – at a price that is very reasonable.

Let’s forget – dare I say it! – golf, and consider rest and relaxation indoors instead. After all, for the denizens of Colombo, what is primarily residing in their minds is leisure, which is of absolute importance after grinding away at their corporate jobs. We all end up in Negombo, Unawatuna or Nuwara Eliya, but nestled in Digana is this resort, which in my honest opinion is a country to itself. For someone who is more of a bookworm and is very happy to settle in a big comfy bed and indulge in some real luxury – The Victoria Golf & Country Resort ticks all the right boxes. This is not to say that there are no excursions present that offer an adventure that can be customized to your liking. But now – let’s look at food – which is a desire harbored by everyone.

Consider yourself an epicurean? Then I suggest you make your way towards the Araliya Restaurant, which offers you a delectable range of cuisines from Western to Eastern to Asian. Based on the level of occupancy, you would be able to indulge in an incredible buffet spread that will tickle your taste buds. Moreover, it needs to be stated that al fresco dining is an option, and what could be more romantic or ideal than enjoying some fine wine and a curated 3-course meal under the night sky. I had the privilege of enjoying the buffet, and the spread was comprehensive while the offerings were divine to say the least.

Sunrise and sunset is an inimitable affair, and both readily greet you at this resort. One of the most memorable moments for me was to wake up to the birds chirping and opening the chalet doors with a coffee in hand to watch the slow and steady sunrise. It was glorious and no artist or photographer can re-create such an incredible spectacle (with or without Photoshop). Since waking up from a dream is an inevitable experience, consider what must be done afterwards. There is always a sunny breakfast and the hospitable sunny smiles of the staff awaiting you at the restaurant, as you consider either a dip in the cerulean pool, a round of golf, or a horse-riding lesson or even a game of tennis. The possibilities are endless, and even an excursion – a nature trek around Victoria or even a variety of cultural tours to Kandy – is a very real option.

Yet, what is central to The Victoria Golf & Country Resort is – in my opinion at least – comfort and rest. With a number of discerning chalets, a few cottages and one villa, this is a property that promises a bed of true comforts. The rooms per se are a rich contradiction with simplicity and sumptuousness mixed in exquisitely to afford its guests with a star-class atmosphere that could remind one of a home away from home. I did mention how quaint this entire property may seem, but rest (pun intended) assured that all the chalets etc.  offer contemporary facilities from Wi-Fi networks to hot water to air conditioning. It goes without saying that the cottages and the deluxe rooms come well-facilitated with a pantry option, which is perfect for a family.

All in all, I recommend The Victoria Golf & Country Resort very highly. For a person who always ended up in Negombo to pursue his leisure interests, this is a newfound paradise that promises so much more than the pictures on these pages.

Wild & Free

My heart skips a beat every time someone tells me that we’re going to Yala. Don’t ask me why. Just know that I simply love the place. Whether it is the wildlife or the tranquility of the place or the complete disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city, it has a certain allure to those who love the great outdoors. Having been to the second largest national park in Sri Lanka on several occasions and been fortunate enough to see the elusive leopard, the majestic elephant and most of the other flora and fauna of the incredible habitat, this time around I kept wondering what more does this place hold for me. Little did I know that a whole new world of experiences awaited my senses.

Resplendent Ceylon, the leisure arm of Dilmah clearly has pleasing the senses in mind with their three unique boutique experiences scattered around the country. Cape Weligama, Ceylon Tea Trails and Wild Coast Tented Lodge in Yala are poles apart in terms of weather, accommodation facilities, ambiance and even the food they serve, but one constant is in their impeccable service.

From the get go of contacting the reservations hotline in Colombo, it was evident that the superior ethics of Dilmah’s founder have trickled down to every branch of its operations. Bookings were meticulously processed and followed up on and we couldn’t wait till the day arrived.

The Journey

The experience actually began with the bus ride from Matara to Tissamaharama. Although the Expressway buses from Maharagama to Matara are relatively comfortable and the ride is just 1 ½ hours, from there on its regular buses and an almost 3 hour journey. In order to avoid the nauseous feeling of winding roads, and super crazy drivers choose to plug in your earphones, and lose yourself in your favourite tunes. Wild Coast graciously offered to pick us up from the Tissamaharama main bus stand and we were happy to be escorted in a luxury van after quite literally having our heart in our throats for 3 hours! (Word from the wise, don’t take the bus, drive instead!)

The Place

One of the only properties allowed to build within the Yala National Park itself, Wild Coast shares the same entrance as Uga and Cinnamon with a Hilton property also coming up in close proximity. Upon entry the first thing you notice is the road block made up of a recycled tree trunk complete with all its branches. In fact sustainability plays a huge role at Wild Coast with maximum effort made to preserve the environment surrounding. This is particularly why there are no electric fences or otherwise cordoning off the property, allowing wildlife to roam freely.

As soon as we got there we were greeted by the staff with wet towels, the sweetest iced tea and pineapple popsicles to quench our thirst while waiting for the check-ins to be completed.

Once that was done we followed a semi-cleared path dotted with cocoons and what looked-like onion-shaped tents with our “guide” Lahiru. Our home for the weekend was one of the cocoons which was an elevated tent cum tree house. Do not be fooled by outer appearances though because this is by no means an ordinary tent. We were soon to learn by a detailed description given by Lahiru that this was one of the most luxurious and high-tech tents you can think of. Designed to emulate a planter’s bungalow almost everything in the tent is made of copper, including the open bathtub which has its own special bath foam. (You can’t use regular ones because they may react with the metal!). The furniture is all teak wood with comfy chairs and a four-poster bed. Then there’s the well-stocked mini bar which is all inclusive in your package. Talk about plush! Wild Coast does not however leave food inside the tent and advices guests not to do so as well, lest you are paid a visit by inquisitive monkeys or worst case an elephant on his way to a watering-hole. The high-tech side of the tent comes with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee machines, and a Sonos speaker system that allows you to connect your mobile device and listen to any radio station or podcast from around the world. If not for having to explore, we would’ve been quite happy to simply lie in bed and relax all day!

The People

Wild Coast takes service excellence beyond excellent. Taking care of guests comes naturally to everyone here and its smiles all around ever-obliging to attend to every whim and fancy, and even chase away the occasional spider or land monitor who happens to cross your path while walking or dining at the restaurant. The culinary team led by Chef Ranil also certainly know how to please your taste buds with carefully curated meals to fit even the most discerning. Every type of meal requirement is taken care of and presented with elegance, whether it be dining under the stars by the beach or inside the jungle itself. We were taken on several culinary journeys around the world at every meal we sat down to enjoying cuisines from India, the Mediterranean, Italy and even some local fare. Special mention must be made of the Passion Fruit and Green Chilli Sorbet which had so much kick in it, the mixed Surf & Turf that was too big for two super Foodies like us and Slipper Lobster Salad that I personally could just eat every day! We also had the opportunity (or Sanura did while I manned the camera!) to cook our own Sri Lankan rice and curry inside the forest assisted by Chef Ranil of course who was such a gracious teacher.

The Outdoors

One of the greatest assets for Wild Coast is the luxury of being situated within the national park and on the coast of an untouched, pristine beach. They like to keep it that way and the restaurant, bar and library are designed to emulate the boulders by the sea. The pool that accompanies the building is also a great place to watch the sun go down over the horizon while listening to the Backstreet Boys softly playing in the background. (For some reason a playlist of BSB songs was on repeat every time we went down for a meal… Not complaining though being that I love BSB!)

What would a trip to Yala be without a sojourn in to the wild? And this time we were to do it on foot. Yes, you read right… we were to take a trip in to the wild on foot. Not alone though. Wild Coast employs the services of an ex-South African military man turned environmentalist names Nick. Now Nick is just something else. Physically we can describe him as six-foot something, bald, modern-day Indian Jones (he dresses the part too!) but it’s the wealth of knowledge inside him that we absolutely adore. From being able to identify an animal by its low frequency call, to gauging whether a buck was walking or running by the distance between footprints, and even being able to look at a pile of rocks and differentiate between its origins, this guy is a walking natural encyclopedia. He also made us put the worse thing we’ve ever put in our mouths, all in the name of playing a game from back home in the bush in South Africa. “Bokdrol Spoeg Competiesie” or the Deer P**p Spitting Competition involves putting dried up deer p**p in to your mouth and spitting it out as far as you can. We tried… And failed… miserably…

Like, I said earlier this trip to Yala was a whole new world of experiences. It was also an eye-opener to the wonders of God’s creation. An ode to freedom in the wild… A feeling we hoped would last forever… A place we didn’t want to leave… Ever…

AWARD WINNING ADITYA UNVEILS TWO ULTRA-LUXURY VILLAS

Placed among the country’s Top 10 Luxury Hotels and Top 25 Small Hotels by TripAdvisor Travellers Choice 2018, the award winning Aditya that sits on the southern beach of Rathgama recently unveiled two ultra-luxury villas, each with a floor space of an impressive 7,500 square feet. Probably the country’s largest stand-alone villas, the two storey villas with its rooftop jacuzzi, has two bedrooms, living, lounge and dining areas with a pantry for added convenience. Spaciousness, which is Aditya’s signature for all its suites is augmented even further at these two villas, with its rooms named after Hindu deities, Shakthi, Rudra, Aditi and Vayu.

With Aditya also winning TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Hotels in Sri Lanka for Service and Top 25 Hotels in Sri Lanka for Romance, the water features in the villas have been conceptualised primarily to take the concept of romance and of course R&R to the next level. The ground floor bedroom has its own 30’x12’ lap pool set within a lush courtyard, while the upper floor bedroom is all about imbibing the beauty of the Indian ocean, whether sunbathing for two during the day, enjoying a signature cocktail in the open-air rooftop jacuzzi at twilight or even under a canopy of stars, undeniably where romance knows no limits. Add a candlelit dinner while indulging in Aditya’s delectable epicurean fantasies accompanied to the symphony of the waves lapping at your feet or a spa treatment for two for some rejuvenation, and romance is definitely in the air. Each villa can be booked in total or as a single room option, either the ground floor or the upper floor.

Having etched its name indelibly in Sri Lanka’s luxury resort landscape and given remarkable kudos by guest who have repeatedly stayed at Aditya since it unveiled its unique brand of luxury in 2005, the resort’s contemporary design, tranquil milieu and outstanding service with the greatest attention to detail have been the collective mantra for its continued success. “The fact that we have been winning TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards consecutively for seven years denotes that we have won the hearts and minds of our guests,” says Director/General Manager of Hermitage Resort (Pvt) Limited, Shamindra Fernando. “To us, it is our service levels that we concentrate on greatly because while Aditya itself has been designed to present ultimate luxury, it is the human touch in service that places us at the zenith. I extend deserved kudos to our team, who all believe that service is the ultimate clincher in the hospitality industry and ensure that it is the ultimate promise at Aditya.”

The chic contemporary design with its Balinese and Sri Lankan antiques artfully interspersed with vignettes from cultural Sri Lanka, relaxation spaces with its tropical hues set against polished cement floors and each suite a haven of privacy, comfort, luxury and elegance heralds unimaginable levels of indulgence, crafted by Aditya to perfection. Add a delectable F&B menu with its a la carte or set menu options for breakfast, lunch and dinner and experience the gourmet journeys that Aditya Master Chef and his team creatively put together. Aditya is “a true secret gem,” as travel writer Philip Woman wrote and can stand proudly holding its four TripAdvisor awards, knowing full well that it continues to be the trendsetter in Sri Lanka’s resort space.

Blue Lagoon

The infamous 1980s movie titled “Blue Lagoon” put a lot of focus on the beauty of an island and the simplicities of island life. Although it was controversial in its depiction and story line, the landscapes created quite an interest in the world to travel to tropical islands on holiday. So much the better for an island nation like Sri Lanka, blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, and relying on tourism for our sustenance.

Although Negombo has been one of the areas that have caught the eye of tourists from around the globe, it has mostly been for the sandy beaches and the proximity to the country’s only international airport. However, Amagi Aria is transforming that interest towards the many wonders of the Negombo lagoon.

The property in Kurana is the closest to the BIA and provides a very different experience to travelers both local and international. With 68 keys, including two lagoon and city view suites, Amagi Aria also houses one of the most sought after fine-dining seafood restaurants in the area.

In keeping with the many hues of blue that the lagoon waters turn depending on the positioning of the tropical sun overhead, the interiors of Aria are adorned with subtle blue shades on the walls, blue and aquamarine accessories and paintings of the wonders of the seas. The word “aria” itself has many connotations from the long solo in an opera to Italian for air. Using the conch shell as its emblem probably indicates the best of all meanings.

Greeted by wonderful guest relations staff, and shown to our room overlooking the lagoon, the first thing that meets your eye is the continuation of the blue. A well-stocked fruit basket, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room Wi-Fi, cable TV and other amenities make the rooms airy and comfortable. And then there’s the breathtaking view.

The view however, is greatest at the 7th floor fine-dining restaurant “Moya”. Amagi Aria’s remarkable fine dining restaurant serves up the best selection of fresh, local seafood that is transformed in to some of the most beautiful dishes. A show-kitchen gives guests the unique experience of watching their food being prepared by the master chefs led by Executive Chef Kumara. As if that wasn’t enough the restaurant is surrounded by the lagoon and glass windows ensure that you catch a glimpse of every side while dining on perfectly executed seafood dishes from around the world.

The menu also introduces ones palette to traditional Negombo recipes that are distinctive in their preparation and presentation. Moya is the local term for where the lagoon meets the sea and the menu is likewise where East meets West. Alfresco dining is also an option especially as the sun sets over the horizon.

If romance is on your mind, then Aria also invites you to dine on the deck, at the tree-house or the private dining enclave hidden among the mangroves. The deck opening up in to a large lawn is also perfect for destination weddings and sundown gatherings. Weddings and corporate functions can also be held at Aria’s 200 seater ballroom.

Relaxing by the pool, enjoying a gentle breeze while sipping on a cocktail off the Lawn Bar menu is the best way to relax and unwind, unless the adrenaline junkie within would rather prefer to take a jet ski out in to the waters or go water skiing with trained professionals. If you are more of a history buff, Negombo is a haven for undiscovered colonial heritage as well.

With a plethora of things to do and delectable food to enjoy, Aria also has the advantage of being just a 45 minutes drive away from Colombo making it ideal for when you need a quick break from the tedious city life. Whether it be for family, friends, colleagues or guests from overseas Aria has an experience for even the most discerning traveler.

TASTE, an all-day dining restaurant offers the ambiance and simplicity of a modern bistro with food that is delightful and brings back memories of home. BLUE, the speciality seafood restaurant boasts an open kitchen, an enviable wine list and sprawling views of the deep blue ocean. The exquisite meals are prepared using seafood delivered daily by local fisherman.

Commenting on the architectural design of Le Grand, Galle, principal architect of the property, Philip Weeraratne from PWA Architects said, “Two extremely distinct and exclusive characteristics of this property were the stunning view of the world heritage monument, the Galle fort and its ramparts across the azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Absorbing all this, it was only natural that our creation and its form should be respectful in proportion, form and texture. We also wanted to position the spaces and unravel the hotel as an exciting maze of discoveries of long vistas and framed views of both the fort and ocean which were an ever changing mural and scape to feast your eyes on.”

The property offers a state-of-the-art gym, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, as well as beauty and massage treatments in the spa area where Balinese therapists combine traditional rituals with precious oils and salves to nurture, balance and restore a guest’s peace of body and mind.

Asia Leisure operates a number of luxury leisure properties including Shingawa Beach in Balapitiya, Tamarind Hill in Galle, Taprobana in Wadduwa, The River House in Balapitiya and its latest addition The Habitat in Kosgoda. History on a Hill

Princesses of ancient times would often travel in a golden and gem-adorned palanquin carried by four able-bodied men. Fine silk would be draped over the sides so that no commoner would lay eyes on the mysterious royalty inside. For her comfort the plush interiors would be decorated with soft cushions. Two hand-maidens would walk by carrying ostrich feather fans to ensure that the tropical heat did not get to the princess. Along the journey, her majesty would dine on the freshest of local fruits and vegetables.

Fast forward to modern times yet find yourself experiencing the same luxurious treatment at the “Randholee Resort” in Kandy. Set atop the picturesque Heerasagalla Mountain, this small but deluxe resort was established with the idea of being carried around in the lap of luxury in a palanquin or “Ran Dholawa”. Managed by Freudenberg Leisure the property is owned by the prestigious Senanayake family of which Don Stephen Senanayake was the first Prime Minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1947 to 1952.

Kandy being the centre of Sri Lankan history itself has many hotels, resorts and boutique properties that each have its own allure and story. Randholee for instance is best known for its breath-taking views from an infinity pool that makes you want to reach out and touch the skies. Then there’s the impeccable hospitality that trickles down from the doormen to the bell boy and the restaurant staff.

We paid a visit to Randholee during the busy Bradby weekend, and were ushered in to a deluxe Mountain View room. Traditional Kandyan motifs and colours are used in the tastefully decorated room. The comfortable bed, en suite bathroom complete with bath tub and traditional herbal soaps, well-stocked mini-bar and reasonably priced room-service menu makes you want to just stay indoors and relax while watching some TV. But how can you ignore the beckoning of the infinity pool even if it happens to be a little overcast outdoors. For those who prefer to stay out of the water, Randholee also has a fully-equipped gym and a luxurious spa that performs herbal treatments to soothe the mind, body and soul.

All meals are served at the restaurant buffet style and the international menu dishes out many favourites from around the world. The resort also has signature dining for honeymoon couples either as a picnic among the forest reserve of the 2-acre property, or dining under the stars in a tree-house built for two.

Peak season for Kandy is when the annual perahera or “pageant” takes place at the historic Temple of the Tooth Relic. This is an ideal time to see Kandy in all its splendor and Randholee is an ideal place to stay and witness it all. The resort will make all necessary arrangements for Kandy city tours, historic tours and even nature tours. All you need to do is ask.
